Malcom and Marie stars Euphoria’s Zendaya and Tenet actor John David Washington. This Sam Levinson-helmed film is “an ode to the great Hollywood romances as well as a heartfelt expression of faith in the medium’s future,” according to a synopsis from Netflix.

Everyone is excited to know how a movie was written and filmed during quarantine would be like. What is more interesting is that Sam Levinson wrote the script for this film in 6 days. Netflix acquired distribution rights for this mysterious movie for $30 million surpassing HBO, Searchlight Pictures, A24, and Amazon.

The plot of the movie was quite secretive before the rights were sold to Netflix. A 20 min reel of the movie was showcased in the virtual Toronto International Film Festival. What we know about the plot from Deadline, the movie is an achingly romantic drama in which the filmmaker portrayed by Washington and his girlfriend played by Zendaya returns home following a celebratory movie premier as he awaits what’s sure to be an imminent critical and financial success.

The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.

How Was The Film Made Possible During The Pandemic?

The shooting commenced on June 17 and was finished in a span of 2 weeks in the eco-friendly private glass Caterpillar House in Carmel, California. Malcolm and Marie were shot on black and white 35 mm film. The film followed local COVID-19 safety protocols, including the entire cast and crew being quarantined during shooting, as well as two weeks before and after shooting, daily temperature checks, and increased sanitation measures.

Actors were in charge of dressing and mic-ing themselves. A chef quarantined with them on the premises; food was individually wrapped rather than served buffet style.

When will it release?

The movie releases on Feb 5, 2021 only on Netflix. The streaming platform plans to wage a full-fledged Oscar campaign on its behalf. So will Malcolm and Marie fall into the Oscar race?
