A legendary Mage Tower returned to WOW in Shadowlands a few months ago. It was already a difficult trial for many players in Legion, but aside from being a challenging place, it attracted heroes of Azeroth with many unique rewards like artifact appearances. While you could have already seen a list of some actual mage tower rewards, here is a full-time walking mage tower guide to lead you through this harsh experience!

Where is the Mage Tower?

Those who haven’t played Legion actively or missed it at all may get stuck by a simple question: how to get to Mage Tower? First of all, you will need to visit a magic city Dalaran floating above the Broken Isles, just near the location called Broken Shore. Deliverance Point at the southwest of it is exactly what you need. Mage Tower with its doors opened once more awaits there.

In Legion, it was accessible only during certain periods of the Broken Shore events and after completion of the special mage tower questline, which included its construction. Such experience was vivid and entertaining, but now it would make things unnecessarily complicated. In patch 9.1.5 Tower was included in Legion Timewalking Bonus Event, which is also no longer restricting players: recently Tower became permanently opened! Just talk with War Council Victoria at the entrance, and you are inside.

Farming Mage Tower is often characterized as the class challenges experience, and that’s partly true. It is a solo experience content where a player must show the highest knowledge of his class nature, and press the buttons that he would rarely press even in some raids. But in reality, everything is a little bit harder due to the specifics of the WoW class system.

There are seven challenges — for Tank, Healer, and five others for Damage-Dealers. One character can accomplish three of them, each is strictly tied to each character’s specialization. A happy exception is a druid class, whose owners can finish four.

Thus, full completion of this part of the content by only the main character is not possible. While someone may not care about it, many Heroes of Azeroth rush into the Tower with exact goals, for which all the trials must be completed. That is why we must briefly look at the list of all mage tower challenges.

Archmage Xylem, who is familiar with some old-school players since the classic period of World of Warcraft, is going to try the luck of Damage-Dealers: Survival Hunter, Frost Death Knight, Havoc Demon Hunter, Subtlety Rogue, and Arms Warrior. A fight place is not less familiar than a person to fight — the Eye of Eternity. Be ready to evade annoying tricks usual for mages, and tor destructive dark spells you would never expect from them. And illusions, of course. Many illusions.

Another prominent person from the depths of World of Warcraft history thirsts for a battle with the hated heroes of Azeroth, but only tanks will dare to visit him. Guardian Druids, Brewmaster Monks, Protection Paladins and Warriors, Vengeance Demon Hunters, and Blood Death Knights with a little help from Kor’Vas Bloodthorn and serious healing help of Prophet Velen shall defeat Kruul and his minions… Again.

A daughter of former vrykul Tidescorn clan’ king Skovald, Sigryn, and two of her loyal servants — Jarl Velbrand and Runeseer Faljar, — wait at the Halls of Valor. They become a challenge object of Enhancement Shaman, Demonology Warlock, Assassination Rogue, Arcane Mage, and Retribution Paladin. The fight doesn’t seem to be fair, but when did it stop you?

Fury Warrior, Outlaw Rogue, Fire Mage, Feral Druid, Unholy Death Knight, and Elemental Shaman search for their precious rewards in the caves where Agatha hides. She is a dangerous Imp Mother, big and dangerous even compared to other Imp Mothers. You may have hoped that the word «imp» remains only in her name, but no — many imps to deal with. Be ready.

Karam and Raest Magespears, the elven brothers. Again, fight without any fairness, especially considering Raest’s love to summon creatures. But surely Balance Druid, Shadow Priest, Marksmanship Hunter, Frost Mage, and Affliction Warlock will find something to push it back properly. These two elves were only a trial before facing Kil’Jaeden and Sargeras — how can they be a threat to those who have fought Jailer?!

Tugar Bloodtotem has caused many troubles to Highmountain with his monstrous experiments on fel infusion of beasts. Well, that doesn’t tell much for those who haven’t ever seen Highmountain — but still, it is one more reason to deal with this unpleasant enemy. Winwalker Monk, Destruction Warlock, Discipline Priest, and Beast Mastery Hunter are welcome to try!

Finally, healers are called to assist Jarod Shadowsong and his allies in taking down Lord Erdris Thorn. It is a ghost of a night elf commander who fought Burning Legions thousands of years ago, like many elves of the Black Rook Hold. A ghost to be sent to rest with the crucial help of Holy Paladin, Mistweaver Monk, Restoration Druid, and Restoration Shaman.

As you see, Mage Tower is going to make you meet powerful bosses. And there is only one way to get yourselves ready.

Although Shadowlands made it easier to start a fight with dangerous enemies, depriving access to Mage Tower of quest requirements and limit of attempts, more serious restrictions and features remain. They appeared ever since this place became a part of Legion-time walking content, but it is important to remember a few things:

  • A Tower is open at 50 character level. But inside challenge characters with these and higher levels are scaled down to 45.
  • The level of equipment is also scaled down to 50, but not scaled up to 50 if it’s low.
  • Consumable items scale down to 45 levels too.

Someone may see a great opportunity in this system. Thus, many potions and gems from the newest patches can be effectively used in the Legion’s content. But everything is not so smooth. Lots of features from Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands, and even older addons won’t work:

  • Effects of Sha-Touched gems and Legendary Cloaks (Mists of Pandaria)
  • Effects of Legendary Rings (Warlords of Draenor)
  • Effects of old legendary weapons: Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros, Shadowmourne, Val’Anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings, etc.
  • Effects of Azerite sets, Heart of Azeroth mechanics, Azerite Essences
  • Covenant Abilities, Conduits, Soulbinds, Shadowlands’ legendaries, and Shards of Domination effects…
  • And even effects of some Legion legendaries.

Thus, there is no recommended ilvl to the successful farm of Mage Tower. On the contrary, players follow other important criteria in search of useful equipment. One of the most important is the number of sockets in it, and here older items are even more suitable. By the way, it’s the right time to find valuable old chants and maybe even get some use of your old beloved trinkets which are lost somewhere at banks and on the bottoms of huge bags.

Additional rewards for completing Mage Tower in Shadowlands were introduced right after its return in a time walking event. Legion made this type of challenge popular because of a chance to obtain new artifact appearances. And no: since patch 9.1.5 it is still not possible to achieve those old rare versions of Legion weapons excluded from loot with the release of Battle for Azeroth.

Still, in Shadowlands one class’ inability to receive those appearances in Mage Tower will be partly compensated… And yes: have you seen the cute bear above? It is Fel Werebear Druid Form, and it awaits brave Guardian Druid who will make Highlord Kruul return in the right direction.

One of the most desirable prizes is a new version of Tier 20. Mage Tower gives an opportunity to get recolored tier sets from the Tomb of Sargeras and include it in your collection of transmogs!

Don’t be so quick to blame druids — each class will receive a recolored set:

  • Diabolic Raiment — Warlock
  • Wildstalker Armor — Hunter
  • Radiant Lightbringer Armor — Paladin
  • Regalia of the Skybreaker — Shaman
  • Demonbane Armor — Demon Hunter
  • Regalia of the Arcane Tempest — Mage
  • Gravewarden Armaments — Death Knight
  • Stormheart Raiment — Druid
  • Vestments of Blind Absolution — Priest
  • Xuen’s Battlegear — Monk
  • Fanged Slayer’s Armor — Rogue

And, of course, the most awaited reward — a completely unique mount Soaring Spelltome. To get this great trophy you can’t just kill one boss with your beloved character which you would gladly like to see on this mount. This is a much harder task and it makes us briefly look through achievements.

From a first glance everything is simple (do not let words about Legion Timewalking confuse you):

  • A Towering Success — complete a challenge for any specialization at the Mage Tower during Legion Timewalking
  • A Tour of Towers — complete every unique challenge available at the Mage Tower during Legion Timewalking.
  • Tower Overwhelming — сompleted every challenge at the Mage Tower across all classes and specializations during the Legion Timewalking event.

A pleasant WoW achievement you came for is A Tour of Towers. It requires completing all those seven unique challenges, which means you have to include at least two more characters in this process to fulfill the criteria. Besides, if you hope your old progress as the Legion’s player will make anything brighter — hope was naive. New achievement requires new progress.

It may seem brutal, but in fact, developers are merciful — imagine if you had to do the Tower Overwhelming to achieve that beautiful Spelltome mount?… Yes, you don’t want to imagine that. Such a great challenge doesn’t even give any points. It’s very special.

Maybe that is the most optimistic ending among all the Mage Tower guides for you to get inspired and launch WoW in order to fight new and yet so old enemies for all these fascinating prizes!
