Koo is an Indian microblogging website just like Twitter. The app was launched in March 2020. The co-founder of this app are Aprameya Radhakrishna, and Mayank Bidawatka.

It won The Digital India AatmaNirbhar Bharat Innovation Challenge last year.

On 9th February, Union Minister Piyush Goyal, announced by Tweeting that he opened an account on Koo.

The Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had already joined the platform and now has a verified handle on Koo.

Koo has features that are similar to the most popular microblogging website Twitter. It allows users to follow people and browse through their feed.

Users can write messages or share them in audio or video formats as well.

It supports various languages, like Hindi, English, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and other popular languages.

MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) on January 31 asked Twitter to block 257 URLs and one hashtag under the relevant provision of the law as they were “spreading misinformation about farmer protests and has the potential to lead to imminent violence affecting public order situation in the country.

Twitter chooses to sit over the request for one full day before blocking them and unblock them a few hours later.

The government has issued an order/notice to Twitter for compliance, failing which penal action under sections that provide for fine and jail up to 7 years can be initiated.

According to Twitter, it held meetings with government officials. In that, Twitter conveyed that the accounts and posts in question constitute free speech and are newsworthy.
