The final episode of The Umbrella Academy season 2 saw the named team returning to their present-day in 2019 and finding out that their team does not exist, and rather, the team Reginald founded was that the Sparrow Academy, and all this could suggest that the Umbrella Academy was actually killed and the Sparrows took their place. Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy jumped to the world of streaming in February 2019 thanks to Netflix and it was a quick success. It didn’t take long for the show to be renewed for a second season, and the brand new episodes arrived in July 2020.

The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings who were born under the identical mysterious situation as other 36 babies. Upon hearing this curious occasion, scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves set out to adopt as many of these babies since he could but only got seven. As the kids acquired superpowers, Reginald educated them formed the group”The Umbrella Academy”, but the children parted ways as a long time passed. The Hargreeves reunited years later for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the apocalypse, but they couldn’t stop the end of the world and needed to leap into a safer place and point in time to save themselves.

Season two caught up with the Hargreeves in Dallas, Texas, in 1963, the season that they reunited as they landed on different years between 1960 and 1963. After successfully quitting the apocalypse in 1963, the Hargreeves have been provided a briefcase by The Commission to come back to their current, which is 2019. Once there, they found that the apocalypse did not occur, Reginald is living, and he founded the Sparrow Academy with various children. This leaves the question of what happened to the members of this Umbrella Academy in that timeline, and while they might be living their own lives by themselves, in addition, it is possible that in season 3 they were murdered years before the first team came in 2019.

The rules of time travel shift in each film and TV series, and how it works in The Umbrella Academy is unknown, but having two variations of Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, and Vanya will be very complex and create a paradox (which Five explained in season 2 when he was getting close to where his other self was), so it is likely that in this new timeline, all of these were murdered. The one responsible for this might have been Reginald himself, as he met the Umbrella members in 1963 and they did not leave a fantastic impression, so he could have gotten rid of them before they messed with his plans, whatever they are. Another suspect is Harlan, who by the end of season 2 still had powers, and since he witnessed the weight that the Umbrella Academy carried together, he might have murdered them at a certain stage.

This would save The Umbrella Academy season 3 out of a few issues as it would not need to deal with the huge question of what occurred to the versions of this umbrella that live in that specific timeline and would skip the entire”paradox” problem. This would also give another problem to the staff to deal with, as they would need to find out who and why they murdered them, all in addition to dealing with all the Sparrow Academy and anything Reginald has already been planning.
