
Based on the novel series The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom is all set to release a final season 5 for its audience. The first season premiered on 10th October 2015 on BBC America. On 26th December, 2018, Netflix renewed the show for a fourth season which released in April 2020. Now a fifth season has been announced on 7th July, 2020.

The Last Kingdom Plot So Far
The story revolves around the resistance of the Kingdom of Wessex to Viking invasions of Southern England in the year 866.
Earl Uhtred of Bebbanburg ruled Bebbanburg (Bamburgh Castle) and Northumbria during the reign of Æthelred II, 100 years after setting up The Last Kingdom. ealdorman of Southern Northumbria was murdered by Æthelred and thereafter, Uhtred the Bold was made earl of a united Northumbria who spent most of his time defending the borders of his nation from the Scots.
Later on, Osbert is re-baptised as the Uhtred after his elder brther Uhtred was assassinated by the Danes in a battle along with his father and other Saxon Nobelmen of Northumbria and only his uncle and step mother survive. Uhtred and Brida, a Saxon girl, are taken as slaves by Earl Ragnar in Danish Northumbria. Ragnar decides to get his daughter Thyra married but on the night before the wedding, the hall is set on fire where the family was asleep and Ragnar is burnt alive. His daughter Thyra is taken as a slave and only Uhtred and Brida escape as they were in the woods making charcoal. The attackers were led by a distraguted Viking named Kjartan who was banished from his land and had come to take revenge. Now Uhtred vows to avenge his adoptive father’s brutal death.
Netflix has released an official statement as a synopsis for the plot of season stating that “Uhtred realise his destiny is more than just Bebbanburg: it is tied to the future of England itself.
“Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.”
The Last Kingdom Season 5 Release Date
Season 5 of the historical fiction is due to release by mid-2021.
