The show called a calling name Republic of Sarah premiered on June 14, 2021. It revolves around a small town called Greylock at New Hampshire and a youthful high-school teacher who finds herself leading the town once it declares itself as an independent state. The series raises the question: Is it easy to launch a new country?

1 day, during a lecture on the Revolutionary Wars, Sarah proclaims that normal people can do amazing things. It is a subtle foreshadowing of the on-coming revolution caused by a global mining company named Lydon that intends to invade Greylock. To save the city from destruction, Sarah uses an obscure cartographical loophole to declare Greylock as a sovereign state.

Launched somewhere on the border between the United States and Canada, Sarah finds out that Greylock was not formally confirmed as an American town because of an unresolved dispute concerning where the federal borders dropped.

When the truth is introduced to the town, an election follows most of the city’s folks vote in favor of declaring the town as an independent state. The mayor of this town resigns in the wake of the decision and it falls upon Sarah to lead the city and build it as a sovereign state.

The rules detailed in the 1933 Montevideo Convention imply that an independent state requires four things to be recognized by other nations; a permanent population, a defined territory, a formal government, and also the capability to set up friendly relations with other nations. The town of Greylock seems to fulfill all of the standards depending on the pilot of The Republic of Sarah.

While there’s nothing to prevent a nation from claiming itself as an independent state, there’s also little to stop a larger, better-established country from sinking into a new country before it builds itself. This fact can be seen launching itself in the last scene of the pilot of The Republic of Sarah since Sarah is arrested by the FBI for sedition.

Aside from such petty politics, individuals of Greylock must face the challenge of infrastructure. The new nation must face the challenge of providing for the people.

While there’s loads of water because the city can be found on a riverbank, the people will likely find themselves in demand of power unless there is an independently owned electricity plant in town. Later on, in episodes of The Republic of Sarah, Greylock has to face the many challenges which have the idea of building a new country.
