THE SHOW MUST GO ON
In the Theater of the Soho CaixaBank, Malaga will only be presenters at the gala, they give out awards ( Pedro Almodovar, Penelope Cruz, Alejandro Amenabar, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Emma Suarez, Jon Kortajarena, or JA Bayona, among others) and the artists involved in musical performances such as Vanesa Martín, Diana Navarro, Nathy Peluso, and Aitana, together with the Malaga Symphony Orchestra. In Spain, the Forqué and the Feroz Awards were organized in the form of face-to-face galas with an audience that strictly complied with the hygienic-sanitary measures imposed by the authorities. At the Goya Awards, Antonio Banderas and María Casado will act as presenters, scriptwriters, and managers of the show and have announced an “elegant and sober” ceremony. Banderas, who knows how to work in Hollywood as well as on Broadway, has surely prepared surprises to attract the attention of viewers. Last year he surprised everyone with the final number of the gala accompanying the cast of the musical A Chorus Line.
WELCOME HOLLYWOOD
One of the great novelties of this edition will be the participation in the gala of actors and actresses from Hollywood and other cinematographies. As announced, superstars like Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Ricardo Darín, Laura Dern, Monica Bellucci, Salma Hayek, Charlize Theron, or Sylvester Stallone will connect and send greetings telematically. A great detail that, we suppose, is due to the good contact list of an artist as international as Antonio Banderas.
LEADING WOMEN
Three of the five feature films nominated for Best Picture ( The Girls, Rosa and Ane’s Wedding ) tell stories starring women. And there are two filmmakers (Iciar Bollain and Isabel Coixet) nominated for Best Direction, a category with four applicants to win the award. The aforementioned Isabel Coixet and Iciar Bollain, as the most recognizable faces, but also Nuria Giménez Lorang or Pilar Palomero, can live their big night. As seen in the recent Feroz Awards, something is beginning to change in an industry where women have not always been recognized in the form of awards they deserved. And it has managed to end (finally) with many stereotypes when it comes to telling stories with female protagonists.
REALITY AS A BACKGROUND
In Adú, by Salvador Calvo, the drama of illegal immigration is very present. In One for all the hard work, they do every day is portrayed teachers. In Rosa’s Wedding, a woman without a life of her own claims her independence from others. And finally, Girls and El inconvenient focus on girls who open up to life and two mature women who share their loneliness, respectively. All these stories of overcoming are treated with sensitivity and respect and it would not be strange that some of the winners this year appealed to the effort necessary to overcome adversity. OTHER CURIOSITIES
In the section for Best Animated Film, there will be only one candidate: La gallina Turuleca. And Mario Casas aspires to take home an award for which he has never been nominated to the delirium of his thousands of fans. On the other hand, Isabel Coixet could receive her eighth Goya, Raúl Romanillos (Special Effects) her seventh, Candela Peña the fourth, as well as Roque Baños (in Original Music). And Natalia de Molina her third, as could happen with Javier Cámara , Iciar Bollain, Juanma Bajo Ulloa and Cesc Gay. Raúl Romanillos and Nacho Royo-VillanovaThey have many possibilities to take home an award since they are nominated for two films in the same category: Romanillos, for Black Beach and Lamentable Stories in Special Effects and Royo-Villanova for The Plan and Black Beach in Sound. LUIS GARCIA BERLANGA AND ANGELA MOLINA
The Berlanga Year, which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the director of films such as Welcome, Mister Marshall, Placido, or La escopeta Nacional, will have a peak moment with the performance of Carlos Later. The comedian will appear characterized by Pepe Isbert and accompanied by the voice of Diana Navarro. A tribute to Luis García Berlanga that has been defined by the versatile artist as “emotional”. Also, Ángela Molina will receive the Goya de Honor in person.
A DIFFERENT TIME
In a different and complicated year, the industry has undergone many changes. Although Adu the favorite film with 13 nominations, was produced by Telecinco Cinema and distributed by Paramount Pictures Spain, this time the independent film distributors will have 18 films that have received 60 nominations in total. A record that rewards your efforts after the cinemas reopen.
