In a new music video, pop star Katy Perry is taking advantage of what is likely continuing, albeit minor, frustration to laugh. Ever since Perry grew up a little over ten years ago, he has always had fans and critics who noted how much he resembles actress Zooey Deschanel. Now the joke (which can sometimes extend to Emily Blunt or Paranormal Activity star Katie Featherston) has gone cosmic. In the video for “Not the End of the World,” the aliens targeting Perry accidentally kidnap Deschanel instead, and hilarity ensues. Little do they know, at Christmas, Deschanel is actually more attractive thanks to reruns of Duende Broadcasting Non-Stop.

Ironically, with “End of the World” in the title and a sci-fi premise, the song echoes the 2005 The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie, which was a comedic riff of the end of the world. In that movie, Deschanel was one of the main leads.

The video was shot months ago but debuted today. Perry took to his Instagram account to chat with Deschanel about the video and explain to fans how it came to be.

“I had the idea that Zooey would chime in while I was having a [maternity] go,” Perry said in conversation. We’ve had this fun relationship for so long… people think we look alike.

Scenes of Deschanel being carried aboard a ship piloted by a Perry-loving blue-skinned alien are interspersed with footage of Perry walking in a stroller and talking to a baby, in a nod to the events that apparently gave rise to the entire video idea. . No pun intended.

“Not the End of the World” is the new single from Perry’s August album Smile . The song also appeared on an EP released last week, “Cosmic Energy,” which was like a Spotify playlist of Perry’s space-themed songs like “ET” and “Wide Awake.” The EP was timed to coincide with today’s Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, which brings the two largest planets in our solar system together in our sky as close as they have been in centuries (although, due to the vagaries of these things, the next once won it will take almost as long).
