Instagram offers two-factor authentication. When you enable it, you are asked to enter a security code or confirm your login attempt each time when someone tries accessing Instagram from an unrecognized or unfamiliar device.
Here’s how you can easily enable it using Instagram App or website.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Instagram
Below are the step-by-step guide to enable Two Factor Verification on Instagram.
- First of all Open Instagram App or Website on your device.
- Click on your profile icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Now, click on the three-line menu icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings (you can directly select Settings by clicking on profile in the browser).
- Click on Security.
- Now, click on Two-Factor Authentication.
- You will reach Instagram’s Two-Factor Authentication setup page.
Here you can choose which authentication method you want to use for Instagram. You can either use text message or authenticator apps to receive two-factor authentication codes. There are two ways to enable two-factor authentication on Instagram account.
- Use SMS (Text message) codes on your phone number to enable 2FA.
- Use third-party authentication app (such as Google Authenticator) to enable 2FA.
We’ll show you how to use both methods, starting with authenticator apps.
Use Text Message Codes to Enable 2FA on Instagram
If you want to use Text Message to receive security codes whenever you log in to Instagram, here’s how you can enable it.
- Select ‘Use Text Message’ in the Instagram’s Two-Factor Authentication setup page.
- Enter you Phone number in which you want to receive codes.
- Now, enter the six-digit code sent on the phone number.
- Tap on Next to finish setting up two-factor authentication on Instagram.
Instagram will show you a bunch of backup codes that you can use to sign in with if you are not getting text messages on your number. Copy these codes and store them somewhere safe.
Use an Authenticator App to Enable 2FA on Instagram
If you want to use Authentication apps to receive security codes whenever you log in to Instagram, here’s how you can enable it.
- Select ‘Use Authentication App’ in the Instagram’s Two-Factor Authentication setup page.
- Instagram will now prompt you to download an authentication app.
- Before installing the app, click on Set Up Another Way at the bottom.
- Instagram’s authentication code will appear. Click on Copy Key.
- Now, Download Google Authenticator App on Smartphone. You can also use other Authenticator apps like Authy, Duo Mobile, etc.
- Once installed open Google Authenticator app and click on Get Started.
- Tap the “+” button in the bottom-right corner.
- Click on Enter a Setup Key.
- Enter your Account name and paste the key (You can enter any name in the Account Name, if you have multiple accounts, you can even use something like DailyTechByte Instagram).
- Finally, click on Add button.
- You will see your Instagram authentication code on Google Authenticator. Tap the code and it will automatically be copied to your clipboard.
- Switch back to Instagram and paste the code you just copied from Google Authenticator app.
The next time you log in to Instagram, you will have to enter your username and password first, followed by the authentication code from Google Authenticator.
