A taper fade is the easiest type of fade that you can do on your hair without the need for a stylist. The only requirement that you need is the appropriate tools to complete the entire process. It is easy to learn and all you have to do is watch it being done on someone and you are ready to do it yourself.

It does not require a lot of time to complete as long as you are adequately prepared. The following is a step procedure for making a taper fade.

1. Preparation

In the preparation step, you will need to gather all the tools that you are going to use in the entire process. Some of the items you will need are;

  • A pair of scissors
  • Clippers
  • A mirror
  • A comb
  • Gel

2. Clean Your Hair

Thoroughly wash your hair using shampoo and conditioner. Ensure you clean your scalp well to remove any gel that could cause difficulties when shaving. Cleaning the hair helps to return the hair to its natural state which is easier to shave.

Use a comb to remove any tangles that could have curled in the hair. Use a drier to remove excess moisture on the hair then straighten it. The hair is straightened to make the shaving work easier.

3. Start Shaving

Before cutting any hair strands, run a comb through it to ensure that it is tangle-free. Use a pair of scissors to trim the top part of the hair. Once you are done, decide where the taper fade line will run through.

After the decision is made, remove the guard from your clippers and begin to shave the hair at the back and the sides of your head. The shaving should be done up to where the taper fade line begins downwards.

Insert the shortest guard on your clippers and shave the hair from where the fade line begins going upwards. This ensures that the hair left at the top of the head balances the fade that you have made.

Change the size of the guard on the clippers and repeat the entire process until you achieve the required size of the fade.

4. Important Points to Note When Making a Taper Fade

  • If you want to achieve the best taper fade, ensure that you clean your clipper frequently when you are shaving. This ensures that it does not clog with hair causing an imbalance in the size of the fade. The clippers should also be cleaned thoroughly after use with oil and a soft brush if you intend to get better results the next time you use them.
  • During the shaving process, shave bit by bit while taking breaks to observe if the results are turning out the way you wanted them to be. This ensures that you get the best outcome at the same time while boosting your confidence during the entire process.
  • Always adjust your guards properly to ensure zero gaps. Gaps between the blades can cause uneven shaving of your fade. Use a screwdriver to properly fit the blades in order to get a perfect fade.
  • Ensure that you steadily hold on to the clipper while shaving. This is because a wrong movement of the clipper can create a different style that you did not intend to get. Hold the clipper using one hand. With the thumb on the upper side and two fingers at the bottom side of the clipper.
  • Eliminate any shadows. Adequate lighting is very necessary when making the taper fade at home. Ensure that the whole head is well illuminated so that you make the right cut at the right place. An overhead lamp can be one source of shadows so you can try sitting next to a window.
  • You can use a foil to make the fade line. This ensures that you get a more accurate way to divide your hair. The foil helps to perfectly hold the hair in position when creating the line.
