
Our beloved show of the 2000s, “The Gossip Girl” is all set to get a reboot. The show is going to be back with 10 hour-long episodes on the upcoming streaming service HBO Max. The series will revolve around the life of wealthy and famous teens of the new-generation.
The original creators, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are going to return as the executive producers. The show will be getting a Gen Z revival and Joshua Safran will be the series showrunner.
Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, and Penn Badgley starred in the original series. It lasted for six seasons which were telecasted from September 2007 to December 2012.
Though it ended in 2012, the characters, Serena van der Woodson (played by Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester) are forever etched in our hearts.
What will the reboot be about?
The synopsis of the reboot according to Deadline reads as follows:
“Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media-and the landscape of New York itself-has changed in the intervening years.”
Safran is an interview made it very clear that the story won’t be a continuation of the previous series. He although mentioned that the reboot would be based on the students at the Constance Billard School of girls.
So, we might see students in uniforms and in their junior year and how the endless apps of social media would impact their life. In the previous season majority of the characters were white, but this time there the leads are non-white and there’s reportedly plenty of queer content on the show.
He also added,
“It is very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from and how you handle it”
When will it release?
According to reports, production of the show began on 2nd November. The first tow episodes will be directed by Karena Evans. Originally, the series was to make its debut in the fall of 2020.
However, the delay in production due to the current pandemic situation has postponed its release. It has also been confirmed by HBO MAX that its iteration of Gossip Girl would make its debut in 2021.
Who will be in it?
The lead role will be played by actress and musician Emily Alyn Lind. She’ll portray the role of Audrey who had been in a long-term relationship but wonders what more could be out there.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the other cast members include names like Laura Benanti, Evan Mock, Whitney Peak, Eli Brown, Johnathan Fernandez, Tavi Gevinson and Jason Gotay.
The showrunners also confirmed, “Kristen Bell has always been and will always be the voice of Gossip Girl.”
