The farmers’ agitation against the Centre’s farm laws has gone international. Tweets by renowned pop-star Rihanna and climate-activist Greta Thunberg favoring the protesting farmers have stirred up a hornet’s nest with the Opposition calling it a hit at India’s reputation and the government taking a strong exception of the comments by the foreign celebrities.
While Rihanna and Greta Thunberg’s tweets gave a boost of confidence to the farmers protesting at Delhi borders for over two months, they also provided fuel to the already sizzling fire between the Union government and the Opposition over the farm laws.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said India’s reputation in the international community has taken a massive hit but Union ministers and BJP leaders condemned the international figures for commenting on farmer’s protests without the proper understanding of the issue.
Meanwhile, with Opposition members demanding a separate discussion on the contentious farm laws, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned repeatedly on Wednesday by Speaker Om Birla.

Tweets posted by Rihanna and Greta Thunberg in support of the protesting farmers have left the Centre and the Opposition in a war of words again.
Rihanna posted her tweet with “#FarmersProtest” to say, Why aren’t we talking about this?! on Tuesday night. Hours after her tweet went viral, climate activist Greta Thunberg and porn actor-turned-model Mia Khalifa posted tweets supporting the farmers’ protest in Delhi’s outskirts.
