Fans have been looking forward to returning the Irish girls and their English boyfriend for more than two years, but it appears there might be a reason for cautious optimism about its return.
Due to Siobhan McSweeney’s claim, the third series is expected to be filmed later this year, even though production has already been delayed multiple times.
It’s clear [the creator of the show] Lisa [McGee] is not willing to compromise on quality, but I think we’re all impatient to get it done for obvious reasons.”
“We’re concerned about keeping the authenticity of Erin and making sure they don’t deliver any editions that are diluted, limited, or repurposed,” Saoirse-Monica Jackson told Metro. The film should be shot at home [in Ireland].
Moreover, Tommy Tiernan (the actor who plays Gerry, Erin’s long-suffering father) believes the show’s third season might be the last.
Despite this, the author of Derry Girls, based the novel on her childhood, Lisa McGee, has assured fans that she is still “plotting” for further installments and a Derry Girls film.

The season will be back in full force next season – and we may finally see Erin and James’ romance upon its return.
In the meantime, you can catch up on the first two seasons or read on for all of the details about Derry Girls season 3.
Derry Girls Season 3 Release Date
In April 2020, Channel 4 announced it would bring Derry Girls back for a third season. Filming will begin in June.
However, the coronavirus pandemic has stopped production on the series, says actor Nicola Coughlan (who portrays Clare).
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph in January 2021, the Bridgerton actress said that the cast was still waiting for production to restart due to the need to shoot in Derry.
“We’re still waiting because it’s integral to the show we film in Derry,” she said. “And we can’t do anything involving a crowd right now, so logistically, it’s tough.”
During an interview with Angela Scanlon on her podcast Thanks A Million (via Metro), she said it would be around now when filming begins. The worst part was that my brain made assumptions to make me feel better. It told me that everything would be fine in a month.
She added, “But filming is on hold for now; we’re all looking forward to going back and seeing the scripts because we haven’t seen them yet.”.
Saoirse-Monica Jackson announced in October 2020 that filming would continue to be delayed until the cast could reunite in Ireland.
Earlier this year, Siobhan McSweeney revealed that the third series would be filmed and that no dates have been set yet.
To watch seasons one and two, you’ll need to go onto Channel 4’s All 4, following Netflix’s announcement on 14th July 2020 that the arrival of season two on their platform had been delayed.
Derry Girls Season 3 Cast
The main Derry Girls cast are all expected to reprise their roles for a third season, including – deep breath – Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Erin Quinn, Louisa Harland as Orla McCool, Nicola Coughlan as Clare Devlin, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell as Michelle Mallon, Dylan Llewellyn as James Maguire, Tara Lynne O’Neill as Ma/Mary, Kathy Kiera Clarke as Aunt Sarah, Siobhan McSweeney as Sister Michael, Tommy Tiernan as Da/Gerry, Ian McElhinney as Granda Joe, Kevin McAleer as Uncle Colm and Leah O’Rourke as Jenny Joyce.
No word is yet on whether Ardal O’Hanlon will return for season three. During season two, he played Mary’s cousin Eamonn. According to McGee, another Irish comedic legend, Dara O Briain, would be a great addition to the season 3 cast.
Derry Girls Season 3 Plot
It tells the story of four teenage girls from Derry, one wee English guy, and their coming of age during the Troubles in Northern Ireland during the 1990s.
According to a statement, the show follows a young girl named Erin who lives among paramilitary forces, British Army checkpoints, and ‘peace walls,’ based on Lisa McGee’s teenage experiences.
Erin’s parents and the formidable Sister Michael are continually dismayed by the mischief made by the gang.
In series one, the most notable storylines were the English kid James joining the gang and Clare’s coming out. We provide our recap of Derry Girls season 1, episode 6, to bring you up to speed on this action-packed and somewhat poignant series finale.
The second series saw James almost leave Derry for good and a potential romance blossoming between Erin and James. Bill Clinton’s real-life speech from 1995 helped end the show positively.
