Black Summer is an American action drama series with the element of zombies. The creators of the series are Karl Schaefer and John Hyams. The first season was released in April 2019. At the time of its release, the series became the most-watched show on Netflix in the United Kingdom. The series was considered moderate and received a 6/10 rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The series shares its writers, production staff as well as the same production company Asylum with Z Nation. Therefore it is obvious for the viewers to think that Black Summer might be a spin-off or has some connection with Z nation. Writers have made it clear that Z Nation and Black Summer are separate and do not have blurred lines. They describe Black Summer as the summer before the apocalypse arrived.

The story is about a mother, Rose, who loses her daughter Anna six weeks after the zombie apocalypse started. In season one we saw her incredible journey in this different world to search for her daughter. At the end of season one, Rose and Anna find each other. The rest of the characters also have accepted their fate.

The plot for season two could start from anywhere. Not much clue was left in season one for the next season. It ended on a concluding note which means something new is coming up in season 2.

Release Date

Netflix announced the renewal of Black Summer in November 2019. Productions began in March 2020. After a few months gap because of the pandemic, productions resumed back in August 2020. However, we do not have a date yet but expect season two to release mid-2021.

The main cast is Jamie King as Rose, Justin Chu Cary as Julius James aka Spears, Christine Lee as Ooh ‘Sun’ Kyungsun and Kelsey Flower as Lance who is AWOL at the end of season one.
