Women’s cricket is now gaining pace across globe, with players showing exemplary games.Indian women’s cricket team is too showing up frequently in the finale’s of ICC tournaments and a lot of its share goes to young players guided by old one’s.Considering this,BCCI is planning to have a full fledged Womens Indian Premier League to tap the potential of young Indian girls.
Indian Premier league proved crucial platform for young talented players especially the Indian lads to show their game and catch eyes of selectors right from it’s inaugural edition of 2008.Similiar results could be achieved if women’s league comes in picture.
Jio Women’s T 20 Challenge
Presently BCCI organises Womens T20 challenge. It was started in 2018 consisiting of three teams. They majorly include Indian players alongside few women cricketers across globe. The 2020 edition was sponsored by Jio and had three teams named Supernovas,Velocity and Trailblazers. They were lead by Harmanpreet kaur,Mithali raj and Smriti Mandhana respectively.
Tournament was played in round robin format and final took place between Trailblazers and Supernovas.Trailblazers defeated Supernovas to win their maiden title.Indian youngster Radha Yadav became player of the series.
Good results can be produced.
Though women’s T 20 challenge exits,it gives very little opportunity for women cricketers to show their game due to limited franchise and shirt format. This year when it was played alongside IPL, women’s T 20 challenge took place on slow pitches.Lack of more teams restricts number of participating players.Former Australian all rounder Lisa Sathalekar affirmed with this saying that ‘I think the BCCI is moving in the right direction but slow in planning a women’s IPL’.More attention and financial assistance to women cricket could not only help BCCI discovering young Indian talent but also opening new phase in women cricket.
The richest cricket board in world is now considering the possibilities for full fledged women IPL and it won’t be surprise for us all to see two IPL’s a year in upcoming days.
