You can find out whether a file is readable or writeable. You also can check whether it is existing and what kind of file it is (generic file or directory). All this can be done using the java.io.File class.

I know no way to find out whether the file is executable or not, there is also no way to check which user or group holds the permission. Java has to be portable so this stuff was probably left on the way...
