I am considering using JavaMail to access a bespoke SQL-based message store.

For the Service provision, I believe I would have to serialize the message and send it over TCP/IP. A server process on the SQL server would then unserialize the message and use SQL to insert the data.

Is this a a badly contrived use of JavaMail?
What access protocol do I specify?

What is the point to have own proprietory TCP based protocil of there is well known and whidely used POP3, IMAP and NNTP?

Instead of implementing multitier JavaMail provider, it will be more usefull to implement complete server for one of the protocols above, and if you like, you can use JDBC storage for backend.

BTW, Apache James already have it.
