How do I merge two images to make a third seperate image?

How do I place one image (a transparent PNG) on top of a second image (a tiff) to create a third seperate Image. I know how to display one image on top of another, but how do I actually save this as a third image?

Well I figured it out if anyone is interested, but I did it the "ugly" way possibly.
