Can the Lucene Documents passed to a single IndexWriter vary in structure? That is, can each Document have a different number of Fields, and can the types (names) of the Fields vary?


If not, can indexes created by different IndexWriters, with different Document structures, be combined?

Yes, I believe all of those are possible.
Your searcher will have to be aware of this unusual setup, too.
