I was looking at the Lucence architecture and I was wondering if it would be better to use:
IndexWriter.addDocument() and IndexReader.delete() whenever a document is changed or
just to have periodic updates,I know that this depends on the nature of the application but my question is purly from a performance perspective

Removing a document from the index and re-adding it is currently the only way to 'update' a document.
