RMI registry is not working.

The problem is basically with rmiregistry.
I am working on a Windows platform (Win 98)with JDK 1.2.2.
Every time i start rmiregistry , i get a list of exceptions (basically Socket Exceptions, port no.1099).
Rmiregistry was working until a few days back, i was using Ethernet cards then, now i have removed them. Could that be a problem ?
I checked out a few troubleshooting sites and one suggestion was installing Winsock. I tried that too , but it does not work.
Please help me as soon as possible, my project is stalled due to this problem.

As far as i know you have to have a working tcp/ip protocol stack, to use RMI, and if you remove your ethernet card you don't have that anymore.
