I have a prototype using SwiftMQ and it was easy to set up.
How do switch over to use SSL?
Is there a method to use a certificate (could be self-signed) and set up a trust policy?

You just specify the JSSESocketFactory for the JMS listener. It uses anonymous SSL certs and works out of the box. Others certs are not supported yet.
