I've been trying to figure out how aol instant message works becuase I'm trying to build something with a few of the same features for private messaging on a web site. Can anyone think of a way to check to see if someone is online and how to find out what their inetaddress would be?

You need to create a server application which will keep track of who is logged on and what their address is.
