I have to write java code to retrieve "data" and "structure of data" stored on Mainframe.
Data might be stored either in database or in flat file format of again either type ESAM or VSAM.
Could you suggest,from where I can get the sample piece of code and which book/site I should refer to get more info regarding this?

Yes , it does, you need only the JVM for the mainframe.
I know that for AS/400 exists.

Already it does. It runs on IBM mainframes 32xx and AS400.
