First I wanna tell that I'm new at Java programming.

I've installed JDK 1.3 and now I'm trying to start learning Java programming by using the a couple of tutorials. But already encounter some difficulties with my first programm (hello.java). Compiling the programm Hello~1.java (ms-dos prompt) gives me the following message :

error: cannot read: hello~1.java.

I've edited the CLASSPATH and I'm compiling the programm in the same directory as the file is located!

Can anyone tell me what's going wrong.

P.S. I've uninstalled another JAVA developer enviroment and afterwards I've downloaded JDK 1.3.

You need to use the longname for the filenames, not the 8.3 shortened name. CLASSPATH has nothing to do with reading the .java file. Check out the Java Languages FAQ here for answers to basics questions like this.
