Is there any difference between calling poa.destroy and orb.shutdown?

I have a probe application which is giving a CORBA TIMEOUT exception while trying to ping a notification service on a remote machine. So the probe tries to detach its subscription from the notification service, and calls orb.shutdown(true)
But when the probe re-connects to the notification service with a different subscription id now, it fails to fetch any alarms from the notification service. Will the old connection to notification service still be present even after a orb.shutdown call? Should I use poa.destroy() instead? What is the difference between orb.shutdown and poa.destroy? It will be great if someone can help.
