How to moniter linux services using java?

How can i do this:

A user gives a list of linux service that he is interested in monitering and our application keeps monitering the linux for the status change of those services, and as soon as a service changes its status, user gets an alert with the service name and the new status.

Define 'status', in the context of daemon processes running on linux? (assuming they are what you mean, by "linux services"?)
