How can i authenticate a user on Linux using Java?

I am developing an application that will take username and password form the client and will authenticate it on Linux.
what i want to ask is that is there a linux daemon that cna do this jobs for me? If yes, then how? Please provide some details.


(i already checked saslauth, but there wasn't appropriate help our there...)

I have no idea how to set it up, but that sounds like a job that LDAP can help with. (You configure LDAP to authorize against the system user lists, and you use Java code to talk to the LDAP instance.)
