Do I need a container like Tomcat on my server to run Ajax programs?

You just need "something" that responds to http traffic requests (usually 'GET' requests) and replies back with the header set appropriately for the data you are returning. (text/plain, text/xml, etc). Using Tomcat with some JSP code is just one way of several to get it done (and might be the easiest to get going your first time out). You could go old-skool and use straight apache-httpd with custom C-based CGI programs. You could probably use the web server now built into the latest (1.6) JDK and write a dedicated ajax responder yourself all in straight java. [shrug]
