Iam a novice programmer and would like to find out how to encrypt usernames and passwords or any data stored in a database.

Encryption comes in a million forms. Roman Emperor Caesar used ROT13 (the turning of the alphabet). It all depends on strength.



The easiest and pretty secure way is to use MD5 for passwords. It's a one-way encryption, which means you cannot get the original back. That's how I store passwords in databases.
