is it possible to reduce the traffic between client and server while transferring Text/XML? I wonder if there are libraries or something to zip the data in order to increase the speed of AJAX applications.
There has to be a JavaScript-Part that unzips received dataand zips data before it is sent; and there has to be a library for the server side, let's assume it has to be a JAVA library.

Thanks in advance!

Let me quote another persons answer to this topic, on another forum:

"If it is just a zip data stream, then it's just a matter of programming even to do it in pure JS. But I don't think anyone's ever bothered to write such a beast (unlike Java, for which a zlib kit exists in the distributed library)."

The thread on this forum can be read here (may be removed after some time):

You must, more or less, create your own code for unzipping the zip content from the server, in your client with javascript. I would not advise to try a solution doing that. I would rather attack the problem from another angle.
