We are creating an index of items that will have 50 or so different boolean attributes (i.e. they either have that attribute or they don't). The list of attributes could change over time, as new ones are added. We are wondering how best to index these with Lucene. Should each attribute be it's own field in the index, or should we do something like index an array of the attributes that the item does contain (this seems sloppier)? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I'd add them as separate fields. If an item does not have any value for the attribute, use some "special string" that indicates "no value", so you can still search against those fields.
