I have tried both on windows xp and solaris various code pages and locales to try to get the Sun J2RE 1.4.1 to pick up the default file.encoding value as UTF-8.

I know that I can set file.encoding to UTF-8, but the docs clearly state that this is really a read only attribute.

How does one change the locale in windows, or solaris to one that the J2RE will recognise as UTF-8?

In Windows the default encoding is supposed to be the same one in which Notepad would save files. I haven't had any luck getting Windows to use UTF-8 in such applications.
