APDU is the smart card's protocol defined in ISO 7816 (part 4 as you can see more at http://unix.be.eu.org/docs/smart-card-developer-kit/ch04/068-071.html), but Java Card is the device platform, is very nice to see that exists another devices with a Java Card virtual machine, do you know "Java Ring"? It's a Java Card device too and it doesn't a smart card! See more here ;-)
