I cannot use . If validation on the form failed, it would open a new window and display the same jsp with the validation errors.

How can I get to display a report for example on a new window?

You can open new windows either using TARGET which doesn't require JavaScript or using JavaScript through window.open().

In your scenario, if you can use JavaScript then in the form's submit button's onClick() event, call a JS function where in do the validation and if everything is ok then do the submition of the form in the same function ie. form.submit() else return false. Note that you should still have the target attribute here.
