I would like to download an audio book to an ibook and then to an ipod.
The book is available only in wma format (which I gather
stands for windows media audio). Is there an application
available to convert to mac?

I think you could use EasyWMA to convert your audio file to MP3.

I'd encode it back to mp3. Check out the All to MP3 convertor.
