You question is pretty broad... and can be taken at different levels: architecture, tools, interop, interface definition... If what you'd like is simply to share the experience of other architects out there, I'd like to recommend one book for you: J2EE Platform Web Services. It is a good read if your project is of enterprise class (overkill if simply to design a google-like web service).
