Hi,

I'ld like to write a program that would beep whenever the network cable is unplugged from the machine. I face the problem in my lab where some morons constantly go about unplugging the LAN cable. I want to find them.

SO everytime someone pulls out my cable I want a program to constantly detect the availibility of the cable..and if when removed must start beeping continuously...

This is probably lower lever access to your network card drivers than Java can provide. You will have to check your network card library documentation to see if it will tell you if it has a live cable.

If you do want to use java, just periodically try to hit some IP that you know is there - like your DNS controller. If you can't hit it, then your connection was broken sometime between this time and the last time that you checked. You will not get notified right away though, it takes time for the connection to time out.
