You have a couple of alternatives:

1. Use Java RMI. RMI has the disadvantage that you will have to open a certain port in your firewal.

2. Build your own serializer / deserializer based on XML (which can travel over HTTP, hence no firewall problem)

3. Use SOAP. SOAP works over HTTP and does not need any firewall setting. There are a couple of SOAP implementations. You may use the opensource product oferred by Apache (Apache SOAP or AXIS). These implementation will do the serialization / deserialization process for you (based on XML), the only thing you need is to understand the SOAP technology and the API.

Please see:

Have you thought about using sockets?
