How do I get started with Java development on a Linux box?

Nathan Meyers

Obtain one of the available ports of the Sun JDK. If you are working on a Linux i386 box, here are some of the current available ports:

JDK1.3: Ports are available from IBM and Sun.
JDK1.2.2: Ports are available from Sun and the Blackdown Organization.
JDK1.1.8: Ports are available from IBM and the Blackdown Organization.

Ports of older Java releases, and ports for other Linux hardware platforms, are available from the Blackdown Organization.

All ports have certain minimum kernel and library requirements, described at the various download sites. When you install a JDK, be sure that your host system meets those requirements.
