India sent thousands of doses of its first shipments of COVID-19 vaccines to the Maldives and Bhutan on Wednesday, as it tries to respond to growing demand from other countries eager to immunize their populations, according to authorities.

The Indian government declared that the Maldives will receive 100,000 doses of Covishield “as a gift” on Wednesday, the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca-Oxford and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume.

Bhutan must also receive 150,000 doses of the same drug. Then it will turn to Bangladesh, Nepal, Burma and Seychelles, the government said. “The world’s pharmacy will distribute (vaccines) to overcome the challenge of COVID-19,” tweeted Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
