Apple is planning its full entry into the smart, autonomous, and electric vehicle industry. The news made the technology giant’s shares rise sharply on Tuesday, which could be the first major chapter in the war between Silicon Valley titans for the future of the automobile market. Not only is Tesla, the undisputed dominator of the sector. Amazon presented its own bet on December 14 through Zoox. The source of all the rumors comes from Taiwan. Specifically, from a company that would have worked with the apple firm in the production of the Apple Car or the iCar, as some hope it will be named. It is all part of the Titan project they have been working on since 2014 and which has had many ups and downs,
With leadership changes and layoffs of a large part of the workforce in 2019. But now the planets seem to have aligned. Apple could present in a few months its own passenger vehicle, 100% electric, with technology to operate autonomously and with a battery that would radically change the current landscape. Sources cited by Reuters indicate that their system would drastically reduce the current price of batteries and increase the range of the vehicle. For now, Apple has not wanted to pronounce on the matter. Production in 2024The alleged plans would go through presenting the iCar in society in September 2021 to make it coincide with the Keynote Presentation, the traditional forum in which the giant presents its news from Cupertino, California. And from there to start
producing cars by 2024,
without it being clear if it would be through its own factory or through a traditional manufacturer with which to partner and share its technology. According to the leaks from Taiwan, Apple would turn to TSMC, the chip company featured in some of its devices. It would be similar to the Tesla, FSD, in beta today.
The big problem – or the mystery, depending on how you look at it – is production. Tesla has taken 17 years to string together several consecutive quarters of profits – five, to be exact – mired in major production problems that forced even its CEO, Elon Musk, to sleep in the factory to set course. And that they already had their own plant, the one in Fremont, California. Apple currently has nothing that is known. The company led by Tim Cook would have to go through a similar process or choose to share the glory with a traditional manufacturer, even if that meant moving away from its usual modus operandi and its taste for control of the product from start to finish.
If there’s a company on the planet that has the resources to do something like that, it’s probably Apple a person who worked on the Titan project told Reuters. “But at the same time, this is not a mobile phone. Autonomous taxiAmazon seems to have the clearest path in that regard. Not only has he invested millions of dollars in Rivian, a Michigan-based electric car maker but his bet on autonomous transportation will go through a company that is already his. In June it closed the acquisition of Zoox a start-up founded in 2014 based in Silicon Valley. Like google-ownedWaymo, it aims to offer a fleet of
Autonomous taxis.
But your model will not be drivable or will have a steering wheel. It will be bidirectional with a capacity for four people and without front or rear. A revolutionary concept in the obvious direction the industry seems to be taking. As Jesse Levinson, one of its founders and son of the president of Apple said in the presentation, “this is a car for the passenger not for the driver. The initial ambition is to revolutionize the way of moving in cities although its 75 miles per hour of top speed -120 km h- would make it possible for it to circulate on motorways. At the moment it boasts lateral movement capacity that would help it to be more precise in its turns and tackle complicated maneuvers much more easily than a conventional vehicle. It would also be safer than traveling in a car operated by a human being. Or so they brandish.
The little car is equipped with six Lidar sensors on the roof plus a handful of sensors and cameras that virtually eliminate blind spots and widen the field of view. Inside it is train car style with the two rows of seats facing each other modern and dominated by technology. There is a surface for charging phones next to each seat and a small touch screen to control things like air conditioning, the route, or the estimated time to your destination. They can circulate 16 hours without stopping thanks to the type of batteries they carry.
Zoox is the fourth company to be permitted to operate driverless vehicles on public roads in California. It was previously obtained by Waymo, owned by Google which has been offering its service to users in Arizona for months. Since October the autonomous vehicle company has begun allowing the general public to download a mobile app to request service for white Chrysler Pacifica cars in and around Phoenix. Before a select group of customers has already been able
