At TLC, Shelton Benjamin became a three-time WWE Tag Team Champion, 17 years after his last reign. The Hurt Business defeated The New Day after Cedric Alexander applied the Lumbar Check to Kofi Kingston for the victory. Benjamin later dedicated his victory to the late Shad Gaspard.
Benjamin got in front of the WWE cameras to give more details about the relationship he had with Shad Gaspard and the reasons that led him to want to dedicate his victory to him. The new tag team champion explained that, after attending the funeral of the former Cryme Tyme member, he promised himself that he would dedicate his next hit to her.
He Promised To Dedicate The Championship To Shad Gaspard
“When I attended his funeral, I made a promise to myself that if I won a title, especially a tag team championship because I knew that Shad and JTG had worked very hard to achieve it even though they never had a chance to be champions, they would He would dedicate it to Shad, no matter what title it was, he would dedicate it to Shad.
Now I wear this belt, I have won the championship, so there was no question. He had never dedicated a title to anyone before, but I considered this occasion to be very significant, very important, for him and for his son. In some parts, he wanted his son to know what a great person his father was and what a great influence and impact he had on my life and the world. ”
Shad Would Have Joked About His Victory
“He (Shad) would probably joke non-stop. He would say something like ‘you don’t need it, you don’t need it, this is for young people, give me that title.’ He would say something funny like that, to make me laugh. Yes Shad if he were here, he would have been the first person to congratulate me. We would have gone to a bar together and he would have tried to make me stay all night, to have fun together. I was probably much more sleepy than I am now, but he would have been there to cheer me up, without a doubt”.
Shad Gaspard Was A Hero
“Shad has left a legacy as a person and as a hero. He left this world doing something that I think any man, and father, any decent human being, would have done for a child, and much more if he is your own child. He was a hero dad. . I like to think of him as a hero.”
