Fans of the animated sitcom Rick and Morty can look forward to a new adventure in the form of a first-person shooter game. The video game is entitled High on Life and features the vivid colors associated with the cartoon series and comes with a whacky twist… your guns are alive and speak to you.
The game has been developed by Squanch Games, the video game development company founded in 2016 by Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick & Morty. It is the fourth video game title to be released by the game developer, following Accounting+, Dr. Splorchy Presents Space Heroes, and Trover Save the Universe.
Rick and Morty innovations
However, it is not the first game to be associated with Rick and Morty. In 2014, Rick and Morty’s Rushed Licensed Adventure was released on the Adult Swim website and the virtual reality game Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-Ality came out in 2017. There are also games based on the series in another area of the entertainment industry. Online casino Unibet, for example, features two officially branded Rick and Morty slots: Rick and Morty Megaways and Rick & Morty Wubba Lubba Dub Dub, which can be played on a range of popular new slots sites. The slot games feature the graphics and, of course, the characters from the TV show as players are taken on an adventure through space and time. The fact that the series has its own online slot games just goes to demonstrate the popularity of the animated sitcom.
Fans of the show can rest assured that the first-person shooter game will be just as funny as the show itself because it has been developed by the show’s creator, Justin Roiland. The talking guns in the game will feature the voices of the comedian and Curb Your Enthusiasm actor JB Smoove and Tim Robinson from the Netflix sketch comedy show I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson. Of course, fans will also get to hear Roiland, who provides the voices for the characters Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith in the popular TV show.
The High on Life video game release puts players in the role of a bounty hunter who travels around the galaxy to save humanity from rogue aliens while armed with the speaking guns known as Gattliens. Players will encounter dangerous wildlife as they complete a series of Hunter Challenges.
Amongst the wide range of Rick and Morty tabletop games, there are two crossovers: an official Rick and Morty Cluedo Mystery Board Game, featuring a twist on the classic whodunnit board game, and Dungeons & Dragons vs. Rick and Morty, a twist on the roleplaying adventure boardgame. Further Rick and Morty releases include the Total Rickall Cooperative Card Game and a popular arcade game.
The popularity of adult animated sitcoms
These examples speak to the enduring and widespread popularity of the show since it first aired in 2013. The show is in its fifth season, with a sixth series to follow soon. The success of the show is powered by a committed fanbase, who are gleefully snapping up the spin-off products associated with the show.
Rick and Morty are just one of a series of modern adult animated sitcoms, which became popular after Family Guy, created by Seth MacFarlane, was released in 1999. The Netflix show BoJack Horseman continued the tradition of irreverent comedy and black humor, released just one year after Rick and Morty burst onto the scene.
The Rick and Morty first-person shooter will be highly anticipated by fans of the show and will be the perfect vehicle to keep them happy as they impatiently wait for the sixth series of the animated sitcom to hit the screens.
