The political drama narrates the story of Tom Kirkman who is an unassuming Secretary of Housing and Urban development. A massive terrorist attack takes place at the State of Union address in Washington killing the President and everyone in the line of succession except the Secretary of Housing and Urban development Tom Krikman. Kirkman is eventually catapulted to become the Presisent of the United States as he is the only designated survivor for the post and the story then showcases the challenges and struggles he faces after all of a sudden handling the strongest position in the States along with managing his political aspirations.

In the season 3 finale, Election Day is coming up, 36 hours prior to it, Kirkman discuses with his psychologist whether or not to leak the audio clip that reveals Moss’s possible noninvolvement in the terrorism plot. Also, Kirkman’s opinion polls are rising. On Election Day, Kirkman is elected to a full term, and along with his supporters and his staff and he hosts a victory party. Despite giving a crowd-pleasing acceptance speech, Kirkman reflects later that he might not be up to the task.
