Can I include a URL in my CLASSPATH or must everything be local? I'd like to keep the 'current' version of a JAR file on a network accessible device without sharing the resource.

You can't just put a URL in your CLASSPATH. However you can load classes from a URL by using a java.net.URLClassLoader. You would have to have a small piece of local code to run initially, that would create the URLClassLoader to download and run the rest of the classes - this is effectively what an appletrunner does.

If you're just using a LAN with Windows clients you might find it easier to place the JAR on a shared drive.
