I understand JDBC is used to communicate between a Java Ap to a relational database. Is this a stand-alone process?

I'm confused. I see references to using ODBC and SQL server along with JDBC and it somehow seems redundant, like call forwarding to a phone that is call forwarded back to your own phone.

I'm missing something.

JDBC is in the equal place as ODBC in window applications. You can't use ODBC in a Java application, at least without any bridge between Java with MS stuff.
