Is there a common way to include build date into the build in such a way that my program can use it?

I'm sure this is quite common. For instance I'd like to let my program (applet) in its Help->About dialog show build number and date. The applet is being compiled and uploaded by Ant. What's the standard way to do it with Ant?

Or generate a properties file using that contains the info, embed that into your distribution, and read it at run-time.

Ant's CVS now includes some JAI manipulation tasks that could even be used to write information onto images such as splash screens!

You can use filters and the copy task to generate source code with this information from a template, which for example defines constants that are used by your about dialog.
