Im writing a web-based java application (on Websphere 3.5), the application should exchange data with a server system in real-time. My considerations are : 1)response should be immediate and 2)very high number of users are expected.

Which technology should I be going in for? RMI/EJB? What are their advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  1. response just won't be immediate. client talking to server incurs at least a network lag so for part I of your question RMI vs. EJB are about the same. there is a difference in protocol (JRMP vs. IIOP) but the difference in most deployments is negligent.
  2. for part II of your question, EJB is the way to go because the specification was designed for scalability.
