Serializing Large Object

When I serialize large object (220k or larger) it takes something like 10 seconds. My question is what can I do about it? (accept to reduce the size of the object). Do I have other options besides serialization?

If you are serializing to FileOutputStream, then put 4kb BufferedOutputStream in between ObjectOutputStream and FileOutputStream. It will help.
